Work to remove the level crossing at Reservoir in Victoria has commenced this week, which includes use of an innovative rail bridge design.

The design involves elevating the rail line over High Street with a rail bridge and includes construction of a new train station and public plaza.

According to a statement from the Victorian Government, a number of design options for removing the level crossing were investigated and the preferred design of elevating the rail line above High Street was considered the best outcome.

On average, 36,000 vehicles travel through the Reservoir level crossing each day with the boom gates down for 24 minutes during the morning peak.

In the past decade there were three recorded collisions and one fatality plus 26 near miss incidents at this site.

“Getting rid of this level crossing is long overdue and will transform the way we live, work and travel around Reservoir for decades to come,” Member for Preston Robin Scott said.

“Now that work has started, I encourage all locals who are interested in learning more about the project to sign-up for regular community updates.”

The project is scheduled to be complete in 2020.
