The Australian Government funded $16 million project to deliver the extra overtaking lane is aimed at improving the safety of the road network for the nearly 10,000 vehicles that use the highway between Wamuran and Woodford each day.

It involves the construction of the one-kilometre eastbound overtaking lane between Chambers Road and Peterson Road, and safety upgrades at the Ironbark Road and Chambers Road intersections.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the project will help reduce driver frustration and introduce safety features to decrease the number and severity of crashes along the regional road network.

“It will also ensure the highway meets demand for long-term road freight and regional transport while providing safer high-speed travel and improved accessibility,” he said.

Construction is scheduled to start in late 2017 and is expected to take one year to complete, weather permitting.
