The new 3.5-kilometre road will carry Pacific Highway traffic during the upgrades, providing alternative access while connecting Woodburn and Broadwater. The New South Wales Government has awarded the contract to build service roads for the Woolgoolga to Ballina section of the Pacific Highway upgrade.

SEE Civil Pty Ltd will build the new 3.5-kilmetre tow-lane road between Woodburn and Broadwater to allow traffic to move from the existing highway so major work can be undertaken.

Following completion of the upgrade, the service road will become a permanent local route.

“These temporary roads are critical to progressing delivery of the Pacific Highway duplication by 2020; a project that will save dozens of lives every year while slashing travel times along the highway. Major work is now underway on six temporary roads at Yamba, Harwood, Chatsworth South, Chatsworth North, Mororo and Iluka,” said New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey in a statement.

More than $520 million was awarded for 54 Woolgoolga to Ballina contracts in 2016.

The full duplication of the Pacific Highway is expected to be completed by 2020, weather permitting.
