According to NHVR CEO, Sal Petroccitto, while this week’s ex-cyclone had been downgraded to a tropic low, its impact across the Queensland road network in the coming days would be significant.

“Heavy vehicle operators need to be aware of their options when it comes to permits, access to the road network and fatigue provisions,” he said. “We want to make sure that all heavy vehicle operators are taking all reasonable steps to be safe during this time and planning their travel.

“Our laws allow operators to apply for emergency permits in cases of emergency or great need. Drivers may also be eligible for exemptions to normal work and rest limits, however operators and drivers still need to carefully manage driver fatigue.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service have established the Flood Recovery Road Access Group to manage emergency and disaster heavy vehicle access under the Heavy Vehicle National Law.

The NHVR said a dedicated hotline and email address is in operation to provide help, information and emergency access to freight consignors and heavy vehicle transport operators travelling in central and north Queensland.

Heavy vehicle operators can apply for heavy vehicle emergency permits in affected regions that cannot be provided through normal processes. These permits are also available when special access is required in cases of emergency or need.
