The largest number of fatal and serious injuries on Australian roads occurs in 60 and 70km/h zones, according to a recent report from Austroads.
Released last month, the report: Road Fatalities and Serious Injuries in Australia and New Zealand 2001-10, documents the first of a four-year study to determine the crash rates for different types of roads across Australasia.
The study used data from different types of road crashes in Australia and New Zealand from 2001 to 2010.
The report also found that road injures have decline in both countries and the majority of fatal crashes in Australia are due to vehicles travelling off-path, crashing head-on or colliding adjacently.
There is a peak in deaths and serious of 18-year-olds in both countries.
Further stages of the study will involve the benchmarking of crash performance statistics between jurisdictions in Australia and New Zealand.
