The Tasmanian Government has confirmed that more safety works for the State’s Midland Highway, with new overtaking lanes, safety barriers and upgraded intersections are to be built.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the imminent works on the Highway’s Symmons Plains to south of Perth were being funded under the $500 million Midland Highway 10-Year Action Plan.
“The Australian and Tasmanian Governments are working together to change lives and save lives by improving the safety of the state’s road system through targeted infrastructure investments, such as the Midland Highway upgrades,” Chester said.
Senator for Tasmania Jonathon Duniam said the new overtaking lanes and safety barriers would be built between Symmons Plains and the South Esk River bridge.
“Works will also include intersection upgrades and a number of turning facilities for heavy vehicles, including at Woolmers Lane and Leighlands Road,” Senator Duniam said.
Tasmanian contractor Andrew Walter Constructions will deliver the works, which are expected to be complete in mid-2018.
Jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, the $500 million Midland Highway 10-Year Action Plan is the largest single investment in the highway and will result in a much safer road for all users
