The Australian and Tasmanian Governments have awarded the contract to Tasmanian company Hazell Bros.

Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson said in a statement that the project will provide an additional south-bound overtaking lane, central and roadside flexible safety barriers and curve improvements.

“In addition, two light vehicle turning bays at the southern end of the project suitable for cars and other light vehicles, as well as a combined turning bay and bus stop at Lowes St, will be built,” Mr. Hutchinson said.

Work on the South of Tunbridge Stage 2 project is scheduled to be completed around mid-2016.

Other Midland Highway projects also scheduled to start this construction season include the Perth to Breadalbane Duplication, Mangalore to Bagdad Stage 1, Kempton to Melton Mowbray and White Lagoon to Mona Vale Road.

Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure Rene Hidding said in a statement that more priority projects will be constructed in the next 12 months, with the overall aim being to bring the full length of the highway up to a minimum AusRAP 3-star safety rating.

“We are working closely with local communities to ensure these projects are delivered as quickly and effectively as possible with minimal disruption to motorists while also maximising local employment opportunities,” Mr. Hidding said.

“We are getting on with building a safer and more economically productive Midland Highway for all Tasmanians and visitors.”
