An $11 million project to improve safety on a key road in New South Wales is now complete.
The Burley Griffin Way is a near-300-kilometre corridor running from the state’s east to west, and is vital to the transport of agricultural freight from the western Riverina region.
The road links this region to the Hume, Olympic and Newell highways.
The Goondah section of this route has now been upgraded to improve safety for motorists. These changes include widening the road to improve curves and delivering greater visibility on the 3.6-kilometre stretch by removing vegetation.
Additionally, 4.5 kilometres of safety barriers have been installed to reduce trauma from run-off road crashes. Audio-tactile line marking, also known as rumble strips, has also been added to alert drivers when they travel outside their lane.
“This $11 million investment in safety upgrades will reduce the frequency and risk of fatal and serious injury crashes on this important freight corridor,” said Bob Nanva, State Spokesperson for Goulburn.
“The wider shoulders will provide better protection for motorists on Burley Griffin Way, and safety barriers have been shown to reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent.”

Drainage on the stretch was also upgraded, while a dedicated right turn late into Goondah Road was added to make it safer for vehicles exiting the highway.
Work on the project started last July, with the safety improvements delivered as part of the Federal and New South Wales governments’ Road Safety Program, aimed at reducing road trauma.
“Safer roads benefit everyone – including local families, local businesses and transport workers,” Nanva said.
“These are the kinds of practical upgrades that make a real difference for regional communities, freight operators and everyone who relies on Burley Griffin Way.”
