A partnership between the Western Australian and Federal governments will deliver a $700 million upgrade to the Kwinana Freeway to improve the efficiency and capacity of the connection, while also making way for the Westport project.
These upgraded sections will add around 50 per cent extra capacity for 100,000 motorists that travel on the road daily.
This investment will also support the operations of the future Westport project, while improving safety and delivering congestion relief for commuters.
Westport is the State Government’s planning program to move container trade from Fremantle to Kwinana. This includes planning new port facilities, a connected road and rail freight system, and logistics operations.
This new funding builds on the previous $67 million joint commitment towards planning and scoping of landside enabling infrastructure for the Westport project.

The Federal and Western Australian governments are working on several projects together, including METRONET, upgrades to the Tonkin Highway and the Outback Way.
Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese said the project would help to support further growth across the region.
“Western Australia is an economic powerhouse, and we want to make sure we are investing in future job creating projects like Westport, while still delivering the immediate congestion benefits for commuters now,” he said.
“This project will support jobs, improve safety and ease congestion for the 100,000 commuters who use the Kwinana Freeway each day.
