$8M Great Western Highway safety upgrades set to begin

The Great Western Highway, near the Meadow Flat public school is set to undergo and $8 million upgrade over two kilometres, starting Monday.

Bathurst MP Paul Toole said the NSW Government is funding the improvements, which are expected to take three months to complete.

“This section of the Great Western Highway, 28 kilometres west of Lithgow, is a key route for residents, visitors and the freight industry alike, connecting the centres of Lithgow and Bathurst,” Mr. Toole said.

Upgrades to the highway will include rebuilding the road, improving drainage and widening the centreline and shoulders.

“The widened shoulders and widened centreline will improve safety by allowing room for vehicles to recover should they leave the roadway, and road resurfacing will improve journey times and trip planning by providing a more reliable stretch of road,” he said.

Mr. Toole said this work follows the recent completion of a $2.1 million upgrade at the nearby intersection of the Great Western Highway and Range Road.

“The combined aim of these safety improvements is to ensure those who set off on a journey return home safely,” he said.

Works will be carried out on weekdays and Saturday morning, with a reduced speed limit of 40 kilometres per hour in place for the safety of road users and workers.
