In an Australian-first, the Southport-Burleigh Road and Salerno Street intersection in Bundall will allow right-turning traffic and through-traffic to move through the intersection at the same time.

“This upgrade will increase the number of vehicles that can make it through the intersection in a single signal cycle and ensure the intersection flows more freely,” said Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey in a statement.

“This innovative project is designed to tackle congestion and deliver the most cost effective solution for Gold Coast motorists.”

Last week, the Queensland Government launched the first information campaign surrounding the continuous flow intersection with an instructional video.

“Traditional intersections have right-turning traffic in the middle of the road – through-traffic moving in the opposite direction must wait for those vehicles to turn and the light to turn green,” Mr. Bailey said.

“The continuous flow intersection shifts right-turning traffic to the outside edges of the road, allowing through-traffic and turning traffic to move simultaneously.

“It will allow a northbound right-turn from Southport-Burleigh Road (Bundall Road) into Salerno Street.”

Mr Bailey said the launch of the video on how to navigate the new intersection would be the first step in a significant education campaign for motorists.

“Being the first intersection of its kind in the country, we need to ensure as many motorists as possible are familiar with the intersection layout at the end of construction, as well as how to navigate it,” he said.

The project comes under the Queensland Governments $160 million Commonwealth Games roads package.

The final stage of the intersection upgrade is expected to start in October and will be finished by mid-2017.
