Bentley Systems has acquired Seequent through a $US900 million ($1.19 billion) acquisition which will see the engineering software company expand its services across the infrastructure and construction industries.

Seequent is a New Zealand founded and based company specialising in software for geological and geophysical modelling, geotechnical stability, and cloud services for geodata management, visibility, and collaboration.

Bentley’s Chief Product Officer Nicholas Cumins said the acquisition will help intersect the worlds of built assets above the ground with the the geoscience subsurface – deepening the potential of the digital twin.

“By getting a true picture of the subsurface, teams can explore, build, monitor and maintain a lifetime digital twin, resulting in a better understanding of the risks and opportunities and ultimately making better decisions,” Cumins said.

Seequent’s solutions are used on large-scale projects globally, including road and rail tunnel construction, groundwater detection and management, geothermal exploration, subsea infrastructure mapping, resource evaluation and subterranean storage of spent nuclear fuel.

Seequent’s tools cover industries from mining to civil, environmental, geothermal energy, hydrocarbon and unexploded ordnance.

Seequent’s Chief Executive Officer Graham Grant said the acquisition will enable both companies to combine their resources to provide greater services to the mentioned industries.

“We are excited to bring together the best of the geotechnical numerical and data management solutions software. Connecting this expanded portfolio of Bentley and Seequent solutions will enable teams to work together – both above and below ground. This will lead to enhanced project workflows and new insights that lower overall risk and deliver infrastructure for life,” Grant said.

“With a shared vision of infrastructure for life, we can help our customers unlock the power of connected people and products.”

Bentley Systems’ software solutions are used in a range of applications for the design, construction, and operations of roads and bridges, rail and transit, water and wastewater, public works and utilities, buildings and campuses, and industrial facilities.

As part of the acquisition, Seequent will retain its brand and unique identity, operating as a standalone business unit within Bentley.
