Bruce Highway bridge $10m upgrade to relieve traffic

Drivers using the Bruce Highway in Queensland between Ingham and Cardwell now have a safer, faster journey with the upgraded Arnot Creek Bridge open to traffic.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, said $10 million had been invested in replacing the former 19.5m bridge with a new 25m span bridge, capable of handling high traffic volumes including heavy vehicles.

“Variable speed limits had been in place to make sure the old bridge could cope with traffic demand, with heavy vehicles having to slow down to 60 km/h to cross it. Investing in a new bridge means drivers will be able to maintain a consistent speed, reducing frustration and improving efficiency,” he said.

“The new bridge is a critical part of keeping north Queensland connected throughout the seasons and ensuring heavy vehicles can get where they need to go efficiently.

“It is one of a number of important upgrades happening along the length of the highway, including the nearby Cattle Creek and Frances Creek project, which will reduce the frequency and extent of flood related closures.”

According to Queensland Minister for Main Roads and Road Safety, Mark Bailey, the Bruce Highway between Ingham and Cairns had more than 2,500 vehicles travelling on it each day, including 600 heavy vehicles.

“This length of road is one of the most crucial along the Bruce Highway, connecting motorists travelling from Cairns with Townsville and beyond,” he said.

The $10 million Bruce Highway – Arnot Creek Bridge project is jointly funded with the Australian Government providing up to $8 million and the Queensland Government $2 million.
