Community members across Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood, and Box Hill will each have their chance to provide feedback for the roll out of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, the Victorian Government says.

The first phase of construction, from Cheltenham to Box Hill, will begin next year, with Precinct Reference Groups set to be available for residents for information sharing, as well as feedback submissions.

The first meetings will include the latest SRL updates, such as details about each station location and the route of the twin 26-kilometre twin tunnels.

The SRL 90-kilometre rail line will link every major rail line from the Frankston line to the Werribee line via the airport, better connecting Victorians to jobs, retail, education, health services and each other.

The SRL will ease congestion and take pressure off Victoria’s transport network. Three transport ‘super hubs’ will also be established at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine to connect regional services.

The enhancement and development of SRL Precincts (the 1,600 metre areas around SRL stations) will allow workers to live closer to construction sites. SRL Precincts from Cheltenham to Melbourne Airport will be home to about 540,000 jobs.

Suburban Rail Loop Minister Jacinta Allan said the Precinct Reference Groups would provide community members the opportunity to contribute to important community issues for the SRL construction.

“The Precinct Reference Groups bring together more than 50 people who represent the diverse perspectives of local residents, traders and stakeholders across the six precincts from Cheltenham to Box Hill that will see SRL East delivered in their community,” Allan said.

“Locals will be at the heart of shaping Suburban Rail Loop and getting the best outcomes for this incredible project and for their communities.”

The advisory groups will include representatives from community and business groups, local councils, institutions such as universities, schools and hospitals, as well as SRLA and relevant state government agencies.

Precinct Reference Groups build on the extensive community and stakeholder consultation undertaken for SRL since 2019. So far, more than 21,600 people have shared feedback through in-person and online engagement.

Initial Works get underway on SRL East from 2022, delivering up to 800 direct early jobs.
