Planning for an improved Linkfield Road overpass in Queensland is continuing, following community consultation by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The upgrade for the Linkfield Road interchange in Bald Hills is set to improve the safety of the overpass, as well as reduce travel time and congestion. The project will also contribute to the local economy.

More than 150 participants contributed to the community consultation, which aimed to support the needs and wants of the local community in regards to the project. The results of the consultation found that 86 per cent of responses were supportive of the overpass upgrade.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the upgrade would address a range of issues at the Gympie Arterial Road and Linkfield Road interchange.

“The community are extremely supportive of the upgrade with key themes around improving the interchange and widening or duplicating the Linkfield Road overpass,” Joyce said.

“Detailed planning for the overpass upgrade is almost complete, with the preferred design option expected to be confirmed soon.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the consultation would also help to ensure that design decisions align with desired safety outcomes.

“These suggestions and more will be considered as we progress towards a preferred design option,” he said. “Consultation is an important part of road upgrades and we’re pleased to see locals taking the time to help us with this process.”

State Member for Aspley Bart Mellish said the feedback received included a wide range of suggested designs.

“Locals also suggested active transport solutions, improving ramp connections from Linkfield Road to Gympie Arterial, and traffic lights to replace a ‘give way’ sign when turning right onto Linkfield Road from Gympie Arterial Road,” Mellish said.

The Australian and Queensland governments have jointly committed $125 million on an 80:20 basis to deliver the Linkfield Road overpass upgrade.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will keep the community updated as the project progresses.
