Works are progressing on the Victorian Government’s project to remove the dangerous level crossings at Maddox Road and Champion Road in Newport.
A 24/7 construction blitz on Maddox Road began Thursday 22 May and will finish late Sunday 25 May. The Maddox Road northbound lane will be closed at the level crossing from Monday 26 May to late June.
Works will include piling at Maddox Road, inspection of signalling on the Werribee Line, installation of traffic barriers on Maddox Road, project boundary fencing being put in place and the construction of hardstand areas on site.
Works are also underway to build the new Akuna Drive link road to connect a boom gate free Maddox Road to Champion Road, which will close at the level crossing.
Both level crossings will be gone for good in 2026, paving the way for the Werribee Line to be level crossing free by 2030.

The removal of the level crossing on the Werribee line is part of the Victorian Governments Level Crossing Removal Project to remove 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030.
Removing the Maddox Road level crossing by building a rail bridge will allow the nearby Champion Road level crossing to be closed to traffic.
With boom gates gone at both locations by 2026, a new link road and an overpass for bike riders and pedestrians will be built.
The link road will connect Champion Road to Maddox Road directly via Akuna Drive and will be open before the Champion Road level crossing closes.
The intersection at Maddox Road and Kororoit Creek Road will also be upgraded with an extended right turn lane and a new dedicated U-turn lane.
