A six week construction blitz has begun in Melbourne’s north-east to deliver new Greensborough and Montmorency stations, and finish laying and connecting 3.5 kilometres of track and signalling along the Hurstbridge line.

The upgrade is part of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication Project, expected to deliver improvements such as increased train services, less crowding on peak trains and better connections to public transport.

Works include building modern stations at Greensborough and Montmorency and duplicating the rail track between Greensborough and Montmorency and between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen, to allow more trains to run more frequently.

The new stations at Greensborough and Montmorency will have improved facilities for passengers including efficient weather protection, safer connections to the surrounding area and improved all abilities access to meet the community’s needs.

The project will make way for a new timetable on the Hurstbridge line, expected to come into effect from mid-2023. The duplicated line will allow trains to run every seven minutes from Greensborough, 10 minutes from Montmorency and Eltham and 20 minutes from Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge during the morning peak.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the upgrades will create more efficient train pathways.

“We’re getting on with delivering our commitment of building these new stations and duplicating the Hurstbridge line to provide more capacity for passengers during peak,” Allan said.

Trains are targeted to be running along the new duplicated track and stopping at the new stations by mid 2023.
