Contractor reaches milestone at Perth Airport

Georgiou’s Perth Airport Skybridge project team in Western Australia have reached a key milestone, crane lifting the first and largest component into place.

The $31 million modular bridge will be installed in sections with crane lifts required to hoist 12 main components.

The first component weighing 83 tonne was moved and fitted by the biggest crane in Perth last month, in just 20 minutes.

Georgiou General Manager Steve Okill said the first module was lifted into place in mid-June after months of planning and preparation.

“It’s an exciting time for our team and great to see the culmination of Georgiou’s planning and hard work come to fruition.”

All crane lifts are expected to be completed by late July, then work will begin on the Skybridge’s internal and external fit out.

This work will see a peak of personnel on the project at 70 workers.

Premier Mark McGowan said the Perth Airport project has created around 2000 jobs, with more than 800 people currently employed and 70 working solely on the Skybridge.

“It provides a crucial link and complements our METRONET plans, and I am pleased to see it underway and progressing to plan.”

Minister for Transport Rita Saffioti said this project will be important for travellers when connecting from the airport to the station.

“This bridge will enable convenient, comfortable and efficient links between the station and Terminals 1 and 2.”

She said at the completion of this project public transport access to Perth Airport will be comparable to other major tourism destinations across the globe.
