Contractor starts major works on Toorak Road crossing removal

Major works to remove the Toorak Road level crossing will begin over the next month.

Over the first weekend of October the underground services and utilities will be relocated and works will begin on the foundations for the new rail bridge.

An alliance of Laing O’Rourke, Jacobs and Metro (MTM) will deliver the $89 million contract to build a rail bridge over Toorak Road.

The works will enable a new rail bridge next to the existing line to minimise impacts to rail and road commuters.

Elevating the rail line is expected to ease the bottleneck for traffic entering and exiting the Monash Freeway. It is also hoped to improve cycling and pedestrian connections and create new open spaces for the community.

Boom gates are down for 35 per cent of the morning peak at the level crossing causing delays for the 37,000 vehicles travelling through the level crossing daily.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said removing this dangerous level crossing will make it easier and safer to get around.

To accomodate works Toorak Road will be closed at the level crossing from 9pm on Friday 4 October to 5am Monday 7 October.

The Toorak Road level crossing will be gone by 2021 and is one of the 75 crossings to be removed by 2025.
