Contractors shortlisted for high-capacity signalling project

A 10 year, $1.6 billion contract has been awarded to design, supply and build Perth’s High Capacity Signalling project, which includes upgrades across the entire 500 kilometre Transperth train network.

Two contractors have been finalised to design, supply, construct and maintain a new high-capacity signalling system for Western Australia’s Public Transport Authority.

The two proponents include Alstom Transport Australia Pty Ltd & Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd (ADJV); and Siemens Mobility Pty Ltd, Siemens Mobility GmbH and Wabtec Control Systems (SafePerth).

The new system will aim to increase the capacity of the network, to satisfy the future requirements by replacing Perth’s ageing urban rail network control systems.

The high capacity signalling system will provide more modern, integrated, communications based train control system that will allow more trains to run more frequently.

The system will achieve this by sending information in real time to the Public Transport Operations Control Centre that’s currently under construction in East Perth. This new centre will monitor the speed and location of every train on Perth’s rail network.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the updated system would help to increase the reliability and safety of the rail network.

“With some of our existing systems at the end of their functional life and a major expansion to our passenger rail network on the horizon thanks to METRONET, delivering a new High-Capacity Signalling system will ensure we can continue to service a modern suburban rail system,” Saffioti said.

The high-capacity signalling system project will be rolled out over the next 10 years. The contract for these works is expected to be awarded in 2024.
