Decmil Group has been selected to deliver the balance of civil works for the Crookwell 3 wind farm project in New South Wales, under an engineering, procurement and construction contract.

Located near Goulburn in New South Wales, the 50 megawatt (MW) wind farm is designed to generate enough energy to power 40,000 households. The project was green-lighted last October and is expected to be fully operational in the first half of 2023.

Decmil’s contract has a base value of $21 million, with an exercisable option worth a further $2 million.

Under the contract, Decmil will be responsible for 16 kilometres of road construction, encompassing both new site access roads and improvements to existing site access roads. Additionally, Decmil will undertake 116,000 cubic metres of bulk earthworks and 6,600 cubic metres of concreting for the towers’ bases.

The contract is part of a broader joint venture agreement between Decmil and RJE Global, with RJE undertaking the electrical works for the plant.

The Crookwell 3 project is being developed by Global Power Generation (GPG) and will include construction of 16 turbines, providing an additional 50 MW of power to the New South Wales energy market via a 330-kilovolt transmission line.

Decmil was earlier selected by GPG to deliver the balance of plant works for GPG’s 218MW Ryan Corner wind farm in Victoria after Decmil had completed plant works and electrification works at Warradarge and Yandin wind farms in 2021 fiscal year.

Decmil Chief Executive Dickie Dique said the company was “transitioning from a year of consolidation in FY21 to a year of growth in FY22.”

“We look forward to working closely with RJE and further strengthening our relationship with them, following the continued successful progression of our joint venture at the Ryan Corner wind farm,” he said.

Decmil has already commenced geotechnical investigations on Crookwell 3 wind farm project, with completion of the civil balance of plant works targeted for mid 2022.

The Crookwell 3 wind farm is the sixth investment by the Spanish company Naturgy (parent company of GPG) in Australia. Already one of the top three independent renewable energy companies in Australia, this new project will see Naturgy reach 750 MW of renewable energy generation projects in the country with secured PPAs.

GPG currently operates the Crookwell 2 wind farm (91 MW) in New South Wales, with a power purchase agreement (PPA) awarded by the Australian Capital Territory Government. In addition, the Berrybank 1 wind farm (180 MW) in Victoria, which was awarded a PPA by the Victorian Government, has recently commenced operations.

The Berrybank 2 wind farm (109 MW), with a PPA awarded by the ACT Government, has started its construction, and is due to be completed in the second half of 2022. As part of the commitments associated to this project, GPG is constructing a 10MW/20MWh battery located in the ACT that will support energy distribution on the ACT electricity grid.
