Decmil Group has been awarded an $88.7 million contract by Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) for the first package of works for Barwon Heads Road upgrade – a crucial arterial link between Geelong, the Bellarine and the growing Armstrong Creek residential precinct.
The project will be delivered concurrently through a trio of construction partners, including Decmil, BMD Constructions and BildGroup, in partnership with Major Road Projects Victoria.
Work will begin immediately and is expected to be finished in 2023.
The Barwon Heads Road Upgrade will add new lanes for approximately four kilometres between Settlement Road and Reserve Road, remove a dangerous level crossing at Marshall, and upgrade intersections at Settlement Road and Breakwater Road.
New traffic signals will also be constructed at Crows Road, Barwarre Road, Marshalltown Road and Reserve Road.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the upgrade would improve traffic flow and reduce congestion on Barwon Heads Road.
“By boosting capacity and removing a key traffic bottleneck, this upgrade will ensure the thousands of people who rely on Barwon Heads Road every day get to where they need to go sooner and safer,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the upgrade would provide better connections to active and public transport modes and ensure Barwon Heads Road could cater for the up to 44,000 daily journeys expected on the road by 2031.
“Greater Geelong has the largest population growth in regional Victoria, which is why we’re taking action to deliver not only this much-needed upgrade but a suite of Big Build projects in the region to provide better journeys for the people who live and work here,” Ms Allan said.
Decmil CEO Dickie Dique said the company’s team was excited to receive the contract and begin work.
“Securing this significant contract is further validation of our strategy to target the burgeoning government spend on infrastructure projects,” Mr Dique commented.
“Our relationship with the Victorian Government continues to go from strength to strength, which is a testament to our ability to successfully deliver major projects.
“This is particularly evident in the Geelong region, where the Barwon Heads project is located, as over the past five years we have successfully completed numerous projects, most notably the Drysdale Bypass and Princess Highway Section 3.”
In March 2021, as part of a joint venture, Decmil secured works with Rail Projects Victoria to upgrade the Gippsland rail line in Victoria.
The contract award follows recent contract wins by Decmil in Western Australia and New South Wales, including a $28.2 million road and bridge contract in Pilbara, a realignment work at the Great Eastern Highway in Wooroloo and a $21 million wind farm contract in New South Wales.
