Designs for Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Ramp shortlisted

Transport for NSW is seeking community feedback on a shortlist of three initial concept designs for a bike ramp at the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway.

The community can have its say on three northern bike ramp options developed by leading design firms, Aspect Studios, Civille and REALMstudios.

NSW’s Minister for Transport and Roads Rob Stokes said community feedback would be presented to an expert design panel, before a winner is announced next year.

“The community has a once in a lifetime opportunity to help shape the future of this iconic landmark by having a say on three shortlisted designs,” Mr Stokes said.

“The designs have been developed to enhance the heritage of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and to ensure a design that respects and embraces Aboriginal culture, as well as being functional for bike riders of all abilities.”

The Sydney Harbour Bridge cycleway runs between Millers Point and Milsons Point along the western side of the Harbour Bridge. Design and consultation has been undertaken for more than a decade to try to find the best solution to the incredibly challenging problem of both increasing safety for pedestrians and meeting the need for improved cycle access to the bridge – all while protecting and preserving the open space and heritage.

Transport for NSW previously made the decision not to progress with a lift or travellator because they did not solve safety or congestion issues, and reduced the capacity of the existing cycleway. The linear bike ramp design has been identified as the preferred option following extensive community and stakeholder engagement.

Community feedback on key elements of the three ramp designs and the Alfred Street south cycleway connection will close on Sunday 16 January 2022. Following the selection of the winning design, the community will have further opportunities to provide feedback as planning progresses.
