Gold Coast locals are being encouraged to have their say on the detailed design of the new Hope Island train station – one of three on the Gold Coast being delivered to support Cross River Rail.

The Cross River Rail Delivery Authority is continuing with planning of three new rail stations on the Gold Coast Line to help connect South East Queensland’s growing population. Stations are being planned for Pimpama, Hope Island (formerly Helensvale North), and Merrimac.

GHD and architectural firm GHDWoodhead have been commissioned by the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority for the design of three stations.

The design of the Hope Island station includes 179 car parks with provisions for more parking, a 40-bike enclosure and a range of improved accessibility features, such as two through-lifts on both platforms, six accessible car parks and tactile indicators.

“This design has been refined based on previous feedback received from the local community,” Queensland Transport Minister Mark Bailey said.

Following consultation on the concept design in October 2019, the design for Hope Island station has been refined and the Queensland Government is now seeking further feedback.

Mr Bailey said changing the station’s name from Helensvale North to Hope Island was one of the key pieces of feedback so far encapsulated in the latest design.

“Not only do we want to build a new station in a growing part of the Gold Coast, but we also want it to reflect community input and feedback, which includes a name that best represents them,” he said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Cross River Rail would make it quicker and easier for Gold Coasters to commute to Brisbane during peak times.

“We’re investing in public infrastructure to rebuild our economy, create jobs and ease pressure on local roads here on the Gold Coast,” she said.

“We’ve heard from locals, refined the designs and now we want more feedback from the community about what they want to see at Hope Island station.

Hope Island station will provide the local community with greater access to convenient rail services; expanding options for easy travel within the Gold Coast, as well as to Brisbane.

Community consultation on Hope Island station’s design will run from Monday 23 August until 18 September, and feedback could be provided on Cross River Rail’s website.
