Early construction works start for Gold Coast’s new Pimpama station

Construction will soon commence by the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority on the first permanent section of the new Pimpama station site, where one of three Gold Coast stations is being delivered through the Cross River Rail project will be located.

Queensland’s Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said site establishment works were already underway in preparation for early construction works to commence in coming weeks.

“Locals would have already noticed surveying works taking place, and fencing and temporary offices already erected on site,” Mr Bailey said.

“This is all in preparation for the construction of an access road into the site and a new signalised intersection at Bedford Road and the Old Pacific Highway, which will connect to new pedestrian and cycle pathways.

“These new works will essentially deliver the first permanent section of the new site before major construction commences on the station itself next year.”

Services company GHD and architectural firm GHDWoodhead were commissioned earlier this year to design the three stations planned for Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac on the Gold Coast, aimed to support the added passenger rail capacity when Brisbane’s new 10.2 kilometre Cross River Rail project begins operation in 2025.

Mr Bailey said early works construction at Pimpama followed the roadheader break through at Boggo Road station in Brisbane last month, a massive two months ahead of schedule.

“It’s great to see even more progress made on this transformational project,” he said.

“The two, 115-tonne, roadheaders broke through at the Boggo Road station cavern last month, having excavated almost 900 metres of tunnel each.

“This means there is now effectively a tunnel stretching beneath the Brisbane River and CBD all the way from Boggo Road to Roma Street.

“And on the Gold Coast, public consultation for the Hope Island detailed design has just wrapped up ahead of consultation for Merrimac station taking place down the line.”
