Early construction works for the Suburban Rail Loop have commenced in Monash, Melbourne, preparing the site for a new underground station and twin tunnels.

Linking every major train service from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line via Melbourne Airport, SRL will transform Melbourne’s public transport network – better connecting Victorians to employment, hospitals, universities and each other. Regional passengers won’t have to travel through the CBD to get where they need to go with transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine.

SRL East will deliver a train line for the first time to Australia’s largest university, helping thousands of staff and students get to the campus every day.

The SRL East station at Monash will connect more people to Melbourne’s largest employment and innovation hub outside the CBD – providing students, employees and visitors with a direct train connection to the area for the first time.

Along with an interchange for bus services and local road improvements, the station will improve access to world-class education, health and research facilities, delivering important transport connections to Monash University.

It will feature two entrances are proposed, north and south. The southern entrance will provide a connection to Clayton campus while the northern entrance will provide a connection to the broader Monash Technology Precinct. The station will include buildings for ticketing and customer facilities, potential retail spaces, extensive undercover bike parking, as well as places for operational equipment and emergency and safety infrastructure.

The new station platform will sit around 20 metres below ground level and be accessible by lifts and escalators.

Works have included the displacement of gas, power and telecommunications services on Normanby and Howleys roads – right near Monash University – and on Ferntree Gully Road.

Trains will be taking passengers in 2035, with tunnelling to start in 2026.

Works are powering ahead at all six station sites, with TBMs ordered and scheduled for delivery in 2025.
