The Federal Government has announced 30 new projects that will improve safety and resilience on roads across the country.

More than $86.2 million in funding under the third tranche of the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program will be directed towards key road upgrades in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria.

These upgrades will include realigning and widening roads, sealing road shoulders, installing new signage and safety barriers, and improving flood resilience.

“We recognise that regional councils often need additional financial support to assist with meeting rising costs and increased pressure on transport infrastructure due to climate change and extreme weather,” said Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain.

“That’s why the Federal Government is delivering the funding local governments need to ensure our roads are safer.”

Sixteen of these road projects will be delivered in NSW, including a replacement of the Grawin Creek Bridge near Collarenebri, the sealing of three sections of the Cokkamindgera Road, and the upgrading of 3.4 kilometres across three sections of the Clarence Way between Bonalbo and Urbenville.

Five of these road projects will be allocated to Queensland, including road network construction in the Townsville City Council, an upgrade to Fassio Road in Mareeba Shire Council, an industrial precinct restoration effort in the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, and upgrades to a section of the Glenmore Road pathway in the Rockhampton Regional Council.

Western Australia will be the site of four road projects – improvements to the Mulligans Lagoon Road and Weaber Plain Road Intersection in the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, an upgrade to part of Merivale road in the Shire of Esperance, the widening of a section of Neaves Road in the City of Wanneroo, and the reconstruction of the Winjardie Road in the Shire of Dandaragan.

In South Australia, the District Council of Loxton Waikerie will receive funding towards the upgrade and sealing of Heinrich and Drogemuller Road, while the City of Onkaparinga will receive support for the reconstruction of Norman Road in Aldinga Beach.

Victoria’s City of Port Phillip will see an increase in funding for a variety of works, including the Broadway Bridge Superstructure Replacement in Elwood, the Stewart Road (Kernot) Bridge Restoration Project, and the James Creek Bridge Replacement project in the Mount Alexander Shire Council.
