Transport for NSW is seeking community feedback on a proposed upgrade of the intersection of Brian and Appin Road in Appin, as part of the New South Wales Government’s efforts to protect motorists and wildlife.
The upgrade comes as part of a series of projects to make Sydney’s south west safer for road users and precious species such as koalas.
A review of Appin Road identified several opportunities to improve safety, such as widening shoulder widths and improving the intersection at Brian Road.
Transport for NSW is proposing the construction of a roundabout at the Brian Road intersection, as well as road widening and installation of safety barriers along Appin Road.
A fauna underpass has also been proposed at the intersection to connect koalas near Ousedale Creek travelling between the Georges River Reserve and Nepean Corridors.

Providing connectivity under Appin Road and protecting koalas from vehicles delivers a key action under the Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan, as well as the Campbelltown Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management.
Key features include a new single lane roundabout at the intersection of Appin Road and Brian Road, a new 2.4-metre diameter and 36-metre-long fauna underpass under Appin Road with refuge poles and tree logs through the underpass to encourage safe koala movements, and a new vegetated path to the underpass.
Other improvements include road shoulder and embankment widening, new safety barriers and fauna fencing along Appin and Brian Road, as well as new drainage, pavement markings, street lighting and signage.
Further improvements to Appin Road have been proposed as part of the Appin Road Upgrade and Appin Road Safety Improvements projects.
Fauna fencing will be located along both sides of Appin Road between Noorumba Reserve near Rosemeadow and Brian Road near Appin.
Two further fauna underpasses are also currently under assessment as part of the Appin Road Upgrade, Mount Gilead to Ambarvale project.
Feedback closes on 24 February 2023.
