Six projects, with a combined value of more than $3 billion, are in the running for the prestigious 2017 Australian Construction Achievement Award.
The Australian Constructors Association (ACA) together with Engineers Australia has announced the shortlist of projects competing for the award.
“The projects, together with the construction workers, architectural and engineering people behind them, have delivered world class construction outcomes and solutions for their clients,” said Lindsay Le Compte, ACA’s Executive Director. “The breadth of skills and innovation involved in these projects showcases the capacity of the industry and its ability to adapt to differing client requirements.”
The winner of the 2017 award will be announced at the Presentation Event at the International Convention Centre in Sydney on Thursday, 4 May 2017.
The ACAA Finalist for 2017 are:
Aubin Grove Train Station & Russell Road Upgrade Perth WA (Georgiou Group)
The final scope of the project involved construction of the first island rail platform and concourse station to be built within live rail in Western Australia, Perth’s largest carpark, duplicate Russell Road Bridge and associated roadworks.
International Convention Centre (ICC) – Sydney NSW (Lendlease)
The project comprises world leading convention facilities capable of hosting three separated, self-sufficient, concurrent events as well as an 8,000 seat plenary. Total exhibition capacity is at 35,000 sqm supported by 8,000 sqm of meeting room space and this is complemented by a grand ballroom to provide Sydney’s premium banqueting space for more than 2,000 people.
161 Sussex Street Redevelopment – Sydney NSW (Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd)
This project comprised refurbishment of an existing hotel and its expansion into an upper-scale tourism/convention destination encompassing an 892-bed hotel (making it the largest in NSW), a 3,450 sqm convention center spanning the entire width of the southbound lanes of the city’s Western Distributor roadway and a new 25-level tower comprising hotel and office accommodation.
Port Capacity Project – Maritime Works Package (McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd) – Melbourne VIC
The Port Capacity Project includes the redevelopment of Webb Dock to create a third international container handling facility for Melbourne alongside the development of a dedicated facility for automotive import-export trade.
McConnell Dowell was the Principal Contractor for the Maritime Works Package of the Port Capacity Project, which comprises the design and construction of improved waterside infrastructure, including upgraded navigation aids and berth facilities.
The EY Centre, 200 George Street Sydney – NSW (Mirvac Group)
The result of a design competition conceived with the aim of creating an iconic landmark Sydney office tower and set across 37 storeys, the building’s distinctive curves and world-first closed cavity façade make it best-practice in environmental sustainability.
The building has a 6-Star Green Star rating and is aiming for a 5-Star NABERS energy rating. Mirvac is also aiming for Gold WELL accreditation for its own tenancy, which requires a focus on the health and wellbeing of occupants – including healthy food at its 28th-floor cafe.
Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre – Melbourne VIC (VCCC) (Grocon PCL JV)
The project has a building area of 130,000 sqm with 6 levels below ground and 14 levels above ground. There is dedicated research space for up to 1200 researchers, 110 same day beds, 96 overnight inpatient beds and accommodation for families of country patients. It aims to be in the top 10 of the facilities of its kind in the world.
