The first of 12 trains for the Sydney Metro to Western Sydney Airport Line has arrived, marking an important step towards first services for the facility.

The three-carriage train was sent from Vienna inAustria, unloaded in Port Kembla in New South Wales, and assembled at Sydney Metro’s new Stabling and Maintenance Facility at Orchard Hills.

One key design feature of the train includes wide, accessible aisles through its centre, which allow for ease of movement. The room below the seats has also been allocated for luggage storage.

Additionally, the train will show high-resolution displays of real-time flight information via a direct feed from the Western Sydney Airport, and will provide passengers with multiple seating choices in each carriage for groups.

Accessibility has also been prioritised on the train, which has designated wheelchair spaces and hearing loops in all carriages.

“Western Sydney is getting the most technologically-advanced driverless trains in the world to service the new international airport and that growing part of the city,” said John Graham, State Minister for Transport.

“These trains will be unique to the Western Sydney Airport Metro line, providing wider aisles for travellers with luggage, digital screens showing real-time flight information and all modern accessibility features.

“Platforms and gates at the new airport station will be wider to make it a first-class experience when services begin.”

The remaining 11 trains are due to arrive over the coming months, with dynamic testing on the 23-kilometre, six-stop line expected to commence later this year.
