Georgiou Group has been awarded the contract to deliver the Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade in Brisbane. The project comprises Stage 1 of the $183 million Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade, being delivered by Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government and aiming to reduce congestion on one of Brisbane’s busiest road corridors.
Moggill Road and Coonan Street are two major arterial roads intersecting in a semi-controlled roundabout at Indooroopilly. The roads link Brisbane’s outer west and south-western suburbs and the Brisbane Central Business District (CBD).
The intersection caters for high traffic volumes and experiences significant congestion in peak hour periods, with 38,000 vehicles per day to the west of Moggill Road, 47,000 vehicles per day to the east of Moggill Road and 25,000 vehicles per day along Coonan Street.
The intersection has a high crash history, with 32 recorded incidents between 2013-18, resulting in 10 hospitalisations and 17 requiring medical treatment. There were 12 further incidents between 2018 and 2020 including 3 hospitalisations, 5 medical treatment and 4 minor injuries.
The Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade Project includes the construction of an overpass from Coonan Street over Moggill Road to improve overall intersection operation and safety for all road users as well as ensure it can cater for future traffic demands.
The award of this project comes just months after Georgiou reached practical completion on the successful Indooroopilly Riverwalk project.
“At Georgiou, we pride ourselves on delivering technically complex projects and this one will be no different. From a community perspective, the project borders commercial, retail and residential properties and with more than 55,000 vehicles through the roundabout each day, it’s important we minimise disruption as much as possible,” Georgiou’s Eastern Region Executive General Manager Gary Georgiou said.
“Having delivered projects for Brisbane City Council, our team has a solid understanding of what the client expects and we will work hard to ensure we deliver, and where possible, exceed their expectations on this critical project.”
The upgrade will be completed in stages. Stage 2 of the Moggill Road Corridor Upgrade will further improve traffic conditions on Moggill Road maximising benefits of the Indooroopilly roundabout upgrade including creating more accessible public transport by creating new indented bus stops to move parked buses out of traffic lanes where possible.
Construction of Stage 1 which will see 85 internal personnel at peak, will commence immediately with works expected to be completed by early 2024.
