The brand-new Goornong Station is officially open, as part of Victoria’s Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade and will provide public transport for residents after a 43-year break in service.

The arrival of the first train at Goornong Station was marked with a community celebration event. The station is now running 18 weekly services – with two daily services on weekdays and four daily services on weekends.

Works on the station included earthworks and service installations, the construction of platform foundations and footings, construction of a turning lane off the Midland Highway and signalised pedestrian crossings.

Trains can now also travel from 80km/h up to 130km/h between Epsom and the new Goornong Station, following the completion of track upgrades. Works saw crews replace more than 20,000 ageing wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers and add more than 50,000 tonnes of new ballast along the track.

Works on the Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade continue, with the delivery of Huntly station targeted for completion in mid-2022, and Raywood Station to follow late next year.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said the new station would provide much needed services, after a long hiatus.

“This is great news for Goornong – with the new station to give passengers more reliable services – and it’s fantastic to see that trains are once again able to stop here, following a nearly 43-year break in service,” Allan said.

The new station is the first of three new stations being funded by the Victorian Government, as part of the $49.6 million Bendigo Metro 3.

The Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade is part of the Federal and Victorian governments’ investment of more than $4 billion to upgrade every regional passenger rail line in Victoria.
