Historic TBM breakthrough for Sydney Metro West

The Sydney Metro West project is now the first in the southern hemisphere to have a double breakthrough involving tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

TBMs have broken through at Five Dock Metro Station, marking a major milestone for tunnelling on the project. This 4.3 kilometre section between The Bays and Five Dock took around seven months to complete.

Tunnelling will continue to build new twin 24-kilometre metro line with stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.

To date, more than 430,000 tonnes of material has been excavated by each machine.

The two 1300-tonne machines will spend the next few weeks traversing to the western end of the station cavern. During this time, the machines will undergo all necessary maintenance before being relaunched to continue their journey to Sydney Olympic Park.

The next stop for these machine will be the Burwood North Metro Station, which is approximately two kilometres away. They are both due to arrive in early 2024.
