Works are progressing on the Hurstbridge Line Duplication project along Melbourne’s north-east rail corridor.

Part of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade’s second stage, the project includes 3.5 kilometres of track duplication and major station upgrades at Greensborough and Montmorency.

The upgrades are expected to allow more trains to run more often, reduce crowding on peak services and create better public transport connections.

Piling works are currently underway to create strong soil foundations to support the weight of the new Plenty River Bridge. The 50-metre-long steel bridge is due to be lifted into place in two sections in September.

Railway Road, which passes under the existing bridge will be closed until August, before briefly closing again to allow safe installation of the new sections.

Works will commence in the coming weeks on the new Greensborough Station pedestrian bridge and concourse, which will be level with Para Road.

The Greensborough Station precinct will feature lifts and stairs to replace the current ramps, as well as modernised facilities such as an air-conditioned waiting room, unisex and ambulant toilets, improved lighting and security cameras, as well as a new 100-space car park and bus interchange.

Construction continues on the new Montmorency Station, which has been designed following extensive community feedback. A new cycling path will be built on the south side of the rail line, connecting Montmorency and Greensborough stations and linking to the Plenty River trail.

Diamond Creek Station platform 2 will also be upgraded, and a new pedestrian crossing will be built behind Diamond Valley College.

Trains are expected to be running along the new duplicated track and stopping at the new stations by the middle of 2023.
