The $19.7 million Monash Freeway Managed Motorway upgrade in Victoria has been completed, which includes a new Intelligent Transport System (ITS).
The implementation of ITS on the M1 Monash Freeway means motorists can expect a safer and more reliable journey between High Street, Glen Iris and Warrigal Road, Chadstone.
The ITS includes overhead electronic signs which will help to advise drivers of lane closures and variable speed limits.
New closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) will relay live traffic information to the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre, allowing VicRoads to manage to any works or incidents more effectively along the freeway.
“By using the overhead signs and CCTV cameras, we can better monitor and manage congestion, road works and incidents, meaning road users will have a more reliable journey,” said Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan in a statement.
When an incident occurs, the ITS enables lanes to be closed quickly with traffic routed to bypass the incident.
“As part of the managed motorway, drivers must obey and observe these overhead electronic signs for speed limits, incident information and lane availability,” said Minister for Infrastructure Warren Truss in the statement.
The upgrade also allows motorists to drive from the M80 Ring Road at Altona North to Warrigal Road in Chadstone.
