Two Komatsu employees traded mine sites for the world of elite motorsport when they travelled to Melbourne for a once in a lifetime experience at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix.
Western Australian field service technicians Caitlyn Hayes and Brayden Rodda were nominated by their peers through Komatsu’s employee recognition program, earning the opportunity to spend the race weekend as honorary members of the Atlassian Williams F1 Team.
The experience placed them inside one of the most high-pressure environments in global motorsport, giving them rare behind the scenes access to the Atlassian Williams F1 Team garage and pit operations.
Caitlyn says stepping into the garage was an eye-opening experience.
“Seeing the level of precision, communication and teamwork required to prepare a car for a Grand Prix race really puts into perspective how much goes on behind the scenes. Every person has a role and everything happens with such speed and accuracy to get the car ready to race,” she says.
Across the weekend, Caitlyn and Brayden experienced many of the fast-paced moments that power a racing team, including crew practice sessions, sitting in on engineering briefings with the drivers and watching the team operate during live practice sessions.
The pair also had the chance to push the cars during pit crew drills and speak directly with mechanics and engineers about the technology and coordination required to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
Caitlyn says the opportunity was a big difference from her day-to-day work in remote Western Australia.
“It was definitely a change going from the red dirt of my swing at work to the crowds and bustle of Melbourne. The buzz around the paddock and in the pits is something that’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself.”
For Brayden, the opportunity offered a rare chance to step inside a completely different side of the engineering world.
“It’s not something I’d ever imagined experiencing in my career. Getting that kind of access and seeing how another high-performance industry operates was really interesting. It also shows how much Komatsu backs its people and gives them opportunities you wouldn’t normally expect.”
