Locals help to deliver $4.15M Newell Highway safety works at Pilliga

Works on an important safety upgrade for the Newell Highway in Pilliga have supported around 40 jobs, may of those with locals.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said fast-tracking widening work on the Newell Highway and installing wide centre lines was delivered under the NSW Government’s $2.3 billion stimulus funding commitment to address the health and economic impacts associated with COVID-19.

“We know how important the Newell is as a freight corridor – and how much heavy vehicles use this road every day,” Toole said.

“Widening the road and installing centre lines is a big win that will ensure safer journeys for all road users including our truckies – and is just one of the ways we’re investing in a stronger Newell Highway.”

Member of the Legislative Council Sam Farraway said the project was a welcome shot in the arm for the local economy.

“It’s great to see these important upgrades delivered with the expertise and skills of local workers and businesses during a global pandemic,” Farraway said.

“About 40 people from Narrabri to Coonabarabran worked on the widening project, which included more than 12 local businesses and suppliers, including specialists in carpentry, concreting, traffic control, conformance testing, gravel supply and hire companies.

He said projects like these support jobs in local communities at this time of need, while also supporting the long-term strategic freight strategy for this important region.
