Major construction on the new Anzac Station has reached completion, the third out of five new stations that have hit the milestone as part of on-going works on the Metro Tunnel Project.
The new station, part of the Sunbury/Pakenham line, has been strategically placed to ease pressure on the St Kilda Road/Swanston Street tram corridor, the busiest tram corridor in the world.
The new station will provide a rail connection to the Domain area, including the Shrine of Remembrance, Royal Botanic Gardens, the Alfred Hospital and Albert Park.
Located below St Kilda Road, Anzac Station has four entrances with stairs, lifts and escalators that link to a new pedestrian underpass beneath busy St Kilda Road. Anzac Station will also have Melbourne’s first tram/train interchange on St Kilda Road.
When the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025 the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will run through new tunnels under Melbourne’s CBD, with five new stations at Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac.
It will give passengers direct train access to new destinations, including St Kilda Road (Anzac Station), Melbourne’s major health and education precinct (Parkville Station) and North Melbourne (Arden Station).

Anzac Station has been designed as a “pavilion in the park”, with signature 85 meter long, 21 meter wide timber canopy skylights filling the station with natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
The new station also has has extra-long platforms that can fit four trams at a time for large crowds attending events such as Anzac Day and the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Separated bike lanes that stretch from the suburb of Windsor to Melbourne’s CBD at Charnwood Road to Linlithgow Avenue, have recently been completed and were jointly delivered under Victoria’s Big Build through Big Build Roads.
