Major construction complete for Newcastle Airport’s International Terminal

Newcastle Airport International Terminal.

The placing of the last steel piece has signified the completion of major construction works on the Newcastle Airport’s $110 million International Terminal project.

The expansion and upgrade of the international passenger terminal is essential to allow the airport to process long-haul aircraft, which can carry close to 400 passengers. Currently the majority of the domestic fleet can cater for only 180 passengers.

The terminal will not only offer convenience to travellers who want to fly internationally. It will also drive economic benefits across the region through inbound tourism and new freight-related industries, including import and export.

Recent works milestones on the project include the demolition of the old terminal, delivery of underground bagging handling tunnels and an electrical substation that’s allowed solar panels to be connected.

Cox Architecture was appointed to design the new terminal, with construction on the project commencing in July 2023.

Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said the project is supporting hundreds of jobs in the region.

“With the last steel piece now in place, this project has completely replaced the old terminal with a new, fit-for-purpose international terminal,” King said.

“This will pave the path for potentially an additional 850,000 visitors and around $12.7 billion in economic activity for the Hunter region over the next 20 years.”

The terminal will open around mid-2025.
