Major milestone for Perth rail network

The preferred proponent has been selected to design, supply, build and maintain the Public Transport Authority’s High-Capacity Signalling project in Western Australia.

The biggest expansion of Perth’s rail network since the Mandurah line has hit a major milestone, with the first tracks being laid on the Metronet Morley-Ellenbrook line.

The first section of rail, laid last week, will see approximately 1.5 kilometres of ballast and sleepers installed north of Whiteman Park Station through to the Gnangara Underpass and along Drumpellier Drive.

The project includes new stations at Morley, Noranda, Malaga, Whiteman Park and Ellenbrook, with patronage expected to reach 18,000 people boarding per day by 2031.

Specialised equipment has been used to undertake the 21 kilometre upgrade, including a ballast box spreader which positions the ballast and an excavator with an ‘octopus’ attachment to position the sleepers.

Western Australian Minister for Transport; Planning; Ports Rita Saffioti said the line is a game-changer for communities in Perth’s north-east.

“This is Perth’s biggest public transport project since the Mandurah Line and will support more than 6500 jobs and help shape vibrant communities,” Saffioti said.

“Once the project is operational, there will be a 50 per cent reduction in public transport times between Ellenbrook and Perth, with only a 30 minute journey to the city.

“The two-zone cap will also make travel accessible and affordable for commuters – helping people to save potentially thousands of dollars a year.”

The $1.1 billion Metronet project is the longest the company has seen and is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments.

The upgrade is expected to support the area’s growth as a major activity centre, while making the most of development opportunities nearby, including new housing.

Set to be completed by late 2024, the project is expected to give locals greater transport choice, reduced travel times and new modern stations.
