Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries welcomed the $1.45 million NSW Government funded widening, strengthening and sealing of seven kilometres of Hermidale Nymagee Road saying freight operators and local residents now did not have to delay travel or make a 100 kilometre detour during wet weather.

The upgraded Hermidale Nymagee Road also connects Nymagee to the soon to be built Hermidale Rail siding, ensuring all weather access and improved safety to this vital freight link,” said Humphries.

NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the grant was one of almost 70 projects allocated funding in excess of $90 million during round three of the program.

“This government is delivering across regional NSW to ensure councils can access funding for vital road and bridge upgrades, which is the reason more than $540 million was reserved under the Fixing Country Roads program over multiple funding rounds,” Ms. Pavey said.

“The Hermidale Nymagee Road upgrade will complement the $2.5 million in funding to build a new multi-user siding at Hermidale, on the Narromine to Cobar rail line.

The Narromine to Cobar line carries 430,000 tonnes of grain and minerals each year and the siding extension is expected to reduce freight moving costs by up to $1.80 per tonne,” she said.

Bogan Shire Mayor Ray Donald said the council contributed $300,000 and managed the project to seal the road, ensuring ongoing efficiency benefits outside of rainfall events.

“The widened road and improved surface enables reduced travel times for all vehicles. It will cost less for the council to maintain and will be safer during all weather conditions. It will also mean less wear and tear on vehicles,” Mr. Donald said.

“We are also looking forward to the new multi-user siding at Hermidale which will accommodate trains up to 1,200 metres long. This will enable trains to be loaded more efficiently while others pass on the main-line while also shifting 33,000 tonnes of freight each year from our roads to rail.”
