The Lancefield-Sunbury intersection upgrade is now complete in Melbourne’s north-west.
Drivers are expected to enjoy a smoother more reliable journey after a five-week construction blitz through January and early February 2023.
Crews worked to replace the existing roundabout with temporary traffic lights, remove existing road surface, install new drainage and asphalting, and added guard rails, lighting and line marking to guide motorists through the new intersection.
The temporary traffic lights at the Lancefield-Sunbury intersection are set to pave the way for the next stage of construction to begin which will allow traffic to flow to and from the existing Sunbury town centre and Goonawarra during works.
Permanent signals will become fully operational later in 2023.

Safety is also being upgraded in the area. Improved street lighting will be installed as well as paths for cyclists and pedestrians to better connect emerging communities to the town centre. Around eight kilometres of cycling and pedestrian paths are expected to be built across the project.
The new intersection is one out of three to be upgraded on Sunbury Road between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road. Traffic lights will be added to the intersection of Francis Boulevard and at the entrance to the Sunbury Eco-Hub.
Drivers will also have use of an extra lane in each direction between Powlett Street and Bulla-Diggers Rest/Loemans Road, and a second bridge over the Jacksons Creek helping reduce congestion in the area.
Once complete, the upgrade is expected to improve traffic flow, connect existing and emerging communities to the Sunbury town centre and accommodate for future residential and commercial growth along Sunbury Road.
The project is set to be complete by 2025.
