Major works to remove a level crossing and build the new North Williamstown Station have wrapped up, marking the end of the Ferguson Street Level Crossing Removal Project.

The level crossing at Ferguson Street was removed by lowering the rail line under the road, making way for the new station and an upgraded community precinct.

The project will improve safety for the 25,000 vehicles that use the intersection each day, as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

The new North Williamstown Station and surrounding precinct features improved facilities including an upgraded car park, bike storage, landscaped open spaces, as well as stairs, ramps and lifts to provide access to the lowered platforms.

Pedestrians can now access the new station via a signalised pedestrian crossing, and cyclists can park their bikes in a new Parkiteer secure bike cage.

A four-metre-wide shared use path has also been installed through the precinct, connecting the station with key areas of Williamstown.

During construction, crews dug out around 50,000 tonnes of soil, clay, and tough basalt rock from under Ferguson Street and in the rail corridor.

More than 40,000 native plants, trees and shrubs have also been planted around the station and its surrounding areas, including more than 400 mature trees and over 50 different plant species.

The Level Crossing Removal Project has removed a total of 64 level crossings across Melbourne so far. The project is targeting a total of 85 removals by 2025.
