Works on the first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail will begin soon, following the Federal Government’s $2 billion funding announcement to build new platforms and realign tracks at Sunshine Station, a key part of the rail link.
A program of works spanning more than six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion, will include two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station, three new rail bridges, new and upgraded tracks, new signalling technology and realigned passenger and freight lines to untangle this complex section of the rail network.
Upgrades to Sunshine Station are required to be completed before tracks can go to the airport, the works will support more than 40 train services per hour.
The announcement comes following years of project delays. It was announced during the 2024 budget that the Airport Rail Link would be pushed back by at least four years to 2032, following disagreements on where to build the station.

With $5 billion already pledged the project from both the federal and state governments, the total cost of the project is estimated to be up to $13 billion.
The Sunshine station upgrade is the first step to connect Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan rail networks to allow for more train services for the growing communities of Melton and Wyndham Vale.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the vital project has been delayed for far too long.
“For a while there was the issue of where the station would be at the airport, that issue has been resolved,” said Albanese.
“Everyone here would agree an Airport Rail is essential for a great global city like Melbourne.”
Caroline Wilkie, Chief Executive Officer for Australasian Railway Association said the additional funding marks a significant step towards a more liveable, affordable and sustainable city.
“The Melbourne Airport Rail Link is a critical piece of transport infrastructure that will benefit Melbourne and regional communities,” said Wilkie.
“The ARA completely supports the project – Melbourne is the only major capital city in Australia without a direct rail link to the airport despite being the fastest growing city.
“It will not only provide an essential public transport link for commuters and business but support the local tourism industry.”
