Early works to remove the Maidstone Street level crossing are underway with crews preparing to build the new road bridge over the rail line in Victoria.
Ahead of major works kicking off next month, crews have been working with utility providers to relocate underground power, water and telecommunication services along Maidstone Street and surrounding roads.
As part of these works, 560 metres of power cables, 670 metres of telecommunications cables, 214 metres of gas lines and 215 metres of water pipes are being relocated.
Other works currently underway include building a new temporary detour route between Slough Road and Ajax Road ahead of Ajax Road closing at the Maidstone Street intersection.
Crews will also begin clearing and compacting the ground near the project site office on Maidstone Street in preparation for bridge foundation works, creating a level surface to allow heavy equipment to operate safely when major works begin.

The final designs for the new road bridge were released in June, with community feedback helping to shape the design, which avoids impacts to important utilities and protected grasslands.
In total, the Victorian Government is removing 110 level crossings across Melbourne by 2030 under the Level Crossing Removal Project, one of the largest rail infrastructure projects in the state’s history. So far 87 have been removed.
The project has made Victorian roads safer by preventing 111 crashes and near misses every year and has slashed travel times in the morning by saving 55 hours of boom gate down time, according to the State Government.
The Maidstone Street road bridge will open to traffic in 2027.
