Moonee Valley City Council takes out top VIC planning award

Moonee Valley City Council took out a top planning award at the 2018 Victorian Awards for Planning Excellence awards, held by the Planning Institute of Australia last week.

The council was awarded the Best Planning Ideas (Large Project) for its MV2040 Strategy, which includes over 150 initiatives­­ to progress the city in a number of innovative ways by the year 2040.

The awards were announced on Friday evening at the Planning Institute of Australia’s Victorian Celebration of Planning Dinner, with 11 awards handed out in total.

The award winners were:

  • Cutting Edge Research and Teaching – Creating Liveable Cities in Australia by RMIT University’s Healthy Liveable Cities Group
  • Improving Planning Processes and Practices – Development Contributions Plan Digital Overhaul by Brimbank City Council
  • Public Engagement and Community Planning – Plan Brimbank by Brimbank City Council and Harvest Digital
  • Best Planning Ideas (Small Project) – Ballarat Road Housing Project by Hansen Partnership, Launch Housing and Schored Projects
  • Best Planning Ideas (Large Project) – MV2040 Strategy by Moonee Valley City Council
  • The Hard Won Victory – Establishing Latrobe City’s Heavy Industry Precinct – Challenging History for a Future Beyond Coal by Latrobe City Council
  • The Great Place Award – Redevelopment of the Caulfield City Rifle Range Building and Elsternwick Plaza by VicTrack and Glen Eira City Council
  • Outstanding Student Project – City of Whittlesea Community Environmental Park Feasibility Study by Naomi Beck and Achala Sirithunga Kalinga
  • Young Planner of the Year – Hugh Utting
  • Planner of the Year – Lisa Riddle
  • President’s Award – Greening the West Project

Planning Institute of Victoria President Laura Murray commended this year’s award winners.

“Every year, the awards for planning excellence serve to highlight leading projects, people and groups within the planning profession,” Ms. Murray said.

“Evident by the award winners, commendations and nominees of this year’s awards program, this has been a fantastic years for planning.

“These projects and people reflect a professions thriving on a Victorian development and infrastructure boom.”
