A newly signed agreement has brought Central Queensland’s latest wind farm one step closer to reality.

Queensland Government owned power company CS Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French renewables group EDF Renewables to progress the development of the Banana Range Wind Farm just outside of Biloela.

The proposed 230-megawatt wind farm will comprise up to 51 wind turbines and large-scale battery energy storage.

Annastacia Palaszczuk, Queensland Premier, said the new wind farm will generate enough energy to power 15,000 homes.

“The Banana Range Wind Farm is part of the renewable energy revolution happening in Queensland,” she said.

Mick de Brenni, Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, said publicly owned energy companies played an important role in Queensland’s energy transformation.

“With an established presence in Central Queensland, CS Energy can draw on existing skills to build local capacity as part of the renewable revolution,” he said.

“With its commitment to local procurement, this project would create secure employment and training opportunities for communities like Biloela, Moura and Gladstone.”

Under the new agreement, CS Energy is considering both equity participation and an offtake agreement in the project, which EDF Renewables first announced in May 2021.

“This MoU demonstrates CS Energy’s commitment to securing a balanced mix of energy sources that can meet our customers’ requirements while also supporting Queensland power system security and reliability,” said Andrew Bills, CS Energy Chief Executive Officer.

Construction of the wind farm is expected to commence in 2024 before coming online in 2026.
