The Northern Territory Government is introducing a range of initiatives to boost the uptake of electric vehicles in the territory.

From 1 July 2022, the territory government will reduce registration and stamp duty fees for plug-in electric vehicles and introduce a new grant scheme for charging stations.

The territory government has allocated $300,000 for the Electric Vehicle Charger (Residential and Business) Grant Scheme, which will include 100 residential grants of $1000 and 80 business grants of $2500 for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle chargers.

As a further incentive, the territory government is waiving the 3 per cent stamp duty on the purchase of plug-in electric vehicles from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2027 – a reported saving of up to $1500.

Natasha Fyles, Northern Territory Chief Minister, said the territory was progressively working towards its target of 50 per cent renewables by 2030, and zero emissions by 2050.

“$300,000 will be invested in supplying part of the cost of installing an EV charger for your home or business,” she said. “Local businesses and families will benefit from this scheme – whether it’s receiving the work now to install EV charging systems or to include a new asset for your business, it’s a win for the territory.”

Eva Lawler, Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, said that from July, the Northern Territory would be leading other jurisdictions on electric vehicle incentives.

“The creation of this electric vehicle policy supports our government’s actions on addressing climate risk and to transition to a low-carbon economy,” she said. “Responding to climate change will not only help us protect our environment, but will support this new industry and the jobs that come with it.”
