New England Highway safety upgrades in Stanthorpe and Ballandean wrap up

New England Highway

QLD - New England highwaySafety works on the New England Highway between Stanthorpe and Ballandean have now been completed.

The $19.4 million project, which was funded through the Queensland Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, has delivered safety upgrades to four sections of the highway.

Queensland’s Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the upgrade works aimed to reduce the likelihood of fatal crashes and serious injuries.

“These works included widening the road to install a wide centre line and safer turning conditions at key intersections, clearing vegetation to improve visibility, culvert extensions and replacements, road repairs and new line marking,” he said.

Final touches to the upgrades, such as audio tactile line marking has now been complete.

“The project has been challenging for several reasons, including drought-breaking rains earlier this year, which contributed to project delays,” Saunders said.

The upgrades will also reduce travel times for motorists, with local areas set to benefit from regional growth as a result of the project.

The Queensland Government has committed $1.7 billion to road safety, which will be used to prioritise safety upgrades, improve driver education, make school zones safer and develop policies to reduce road crashes and trauma.

The project was supported by contractors SEE Civil, who thanked the community for their patience and cooperation during the installation of the safety upgrades.

Safety improvements have been designed for a further three sections of the New England Highway between Stanthorpe and Ballandean.
