The Western Australian Government has gazetted a new METRONET East Redevelopment Scheme.

The scheme will help to deliver future development around the new Bayswater and High Wycombe stations, as well as the Midland station.

In June 2019, the Western Australia Minister for Planning Rita Saffioti announced that the Midland Redevelopment Area would be extended to encompass precincts surrounding the new Bayswater and High Wycombe train stations, creating METRONET East.

The Bayswater and High Wycombe project areas were formally established in March 2020, in consultation with the City of Bayswater and City of Kalamunda.

The scheme will provide a framework to ensure that each project can meet the demands of the local community. It also ensures that the preferred land use for the precinct is appropriate for the project, including residential and commercial land.

The Planning Minister is hoping the new scheme will establish a framework to encourage private investment in METRONET train stations.

“We want to create vibrant METRONET precincts, with a diverse range of housing options, close to top quality public transport links, workplaces, entertainment and community facilities,” Ms Saffioti said.

Lands Minister Tony Buti said that the new precincts will provide greater infrastructure for the local communities and visitors.

“The new METRONET stations will bring more activity to these centres, so it is important that new developments in these station precincts are well designed and meet the needs of locals and visitors,” Buti said.

Feedback from the community and stakeholders guided the initial planning, helping to deliver facilities that cater to local public transport and community services.

Detailed planning on the Bayswater and High Wycombe projects is already underway, with guidelines for the designs to be released for public consultation.
